Figure Matrices Practice Question

In each row and/or column, the pictures change in the same way or follow the same rule.

Choose the answer that goes in the empty box in the matrix following the same rule.

CCAT Grade 6 Test Sample Question - Figure Matrices

The correct answer is 1.

Across the row, the shapes remain the same.
In all the rows and columns, the large form is a pentagon, the medium form is a circle, and the small form is an arrow.

Additionally, across the rows, each large, medium, and small shape is presented in three colors. Each shape does not appear in the same color twice.

Therefore, in the bottom row, the answer choice will contain a white pentagon, a gray circle, and a white arrow.

We can eliminate answer choices two and three because they have an image with the wrong colors.

We are left with answer choices 1, 4, and 5. We can further see that the small shapes (arrows) rotate 45 degrees counterclockwise and do not change position.

We can also eliminate answer choices 4 and 5, and are left with answer 1.

Welcome! If your child is preparing for the 2026 CCAT Grade 6 Test (Level 12), you’ve come to the right place.

The following comprehensive practice resources are designed to help your child build confidence, improve their skills, and achieve higher scores so that they qualify for your desired gifted program.

Figure Classification Practice Question

In Figure Classification questions, three pictures share a connection or a characteristic. Choose the answer that shares the same connection/characteristic from the answer choices.

Canadian Cognitive Ability Test Grade 6 Sample Question - Figure Classification

The correct answer is 2.

In this question, you can see that:
– All figures consist of two shapes: a gray circle and a shape with straight lines and sharp corners.
– In all figures, at least some of the corners of the shape with the straight lines intersect with the circle’s outer line.

In answer choice 2 there is a black circle and a shape that has straight lines and sharp corners, and some of the corners intersect with the circle’s outer line.

Answer choice 3 can immediately be eliminated as its circle is white, and each of the circles above is gray.

You can also eliminate answer choice 5 because it has a curved lined shape and does not intersect with the circle’s outer line at all.

Looking carefully, answers 1 and 4 can be eliminated since the corners of the shape with straight lines never intersect with the circle’s outer line – they only intersect in the middle of the straight lines.

You are then only left with answer 2, which is the correct answer, as there is a gray circle, and the straight-lined shape intersects with it at some of its corners.

Paper Folding Practice Question

This question type shows a paper folded several times and then punched with holes. The answer choices contain unfolded papers with punched-in holes. You need to determine which of the answer choices is the final product of the unfolded punched-in paper.

CCAT Grade 6 Test Practice Question

The correct answer is 2.

  • First, the square was folded vertically in half from bottom to top.
  • Then, the bottom half is folded in quarters, again from bottom to top. Now, only the upper quarter is visible.
  • Then, two holes were punched in the remaining quarter: one near the top-right corner, and the other near the middle of the crease.
  • Since the paper was folded in half twice, the holes were punched through four layers of paper. The holes will mirror vertically twice, according to the creases (the creases act as mirrors).
  • Therefore, when the paper is unfolded it will have eight holes: 2 holes x 4 layers = 8 holes, as described above.

They are all aligned at the middle or right positions of the figure, forming a kind of pattern like the one described in the 2nd choice.

Hence, the correct answer is 2.

Nonverbal items can feel difficult at first, especially when the clock is ticking.

Skills like spotting patterns, working through matrices, and choosing the best answer quickly all improve with practice.

With steady exposure, these questions become more manageable, accuracy rises, and confidence follows.

CCAT Grade 6 Quantitative Battery Sample Questions

Number Analogies Practice Question

This question type shows two pairs of numbers with a certain mathematical connection and another number that shares that connection with one of the answer choices. Find the missing number for the third pair.

[39 → 7] [51 → 11] [93 → ?]

The answer is 25.

Look for the pattern in the first series of numbers. We get from 39 to 7 by dividing by 3 and then subtracting 6 (the pattern is ÷3 – 6). Indeed, 39 ÷ 3 = 3 – 6 = 7.

Likewise, we get from 51 to 20 by using the same pattern (÷3 – 6). Indeed, 51 ÷ 3 = 17 – 6 = 11.

The next series of numbers should follow the same pattern, meaning that the rule between 93 and ? should be (÷3 – 6): 93 ÷ 3 – 6 = 25, meaning that the correct answer will be 25.

? = 25.

Number Series Practice Question

This question shows a series of numbers that have a rule. Use the rule to determine which number will come next in the series.

6   13   27   55   111   ?

Correct Answer: 223

In the series, the next number is obtained by multiplying the previous number by 2 and adding 1 to the answer.

The sequence is 6*2 + 1=13, 13*2 + 1 = 27, 27*2+1=55, 55*2+1 =111 and 111*2+1 = 223.

Number Puzzles Practice Question

In this question type, you are given a set of equations. You must solve the equations to determine the number that goes instead of the question mark.

(⍰ × 4) – 10 = 6 × ◊
◊ = ◯ – 8
◯ = 36 ÷ 4

Correct Answer: 4

◯ = 36÷4 = 9
◊ = 9 -8 (using ◯ = 9)
◊ = 1
(⍰ × 4) – 10 = 6 × 1 (using ◊ =1)
(⍰ × 4) – 10 = 6 (Multiplying 6 by 1)
⍰ × 4 = 16 (Adding 10 on both sides)
⍰ = 4 (Dividing by 4)

CCAT Grade 6 Verbal Battery Sample Questions

Verbal Analogies Practice Question

This question type provides a pair of words that go together in a certain way and a third word. Choose a word from the answer choices that goes together with the third word in the same way.

keystone : arch :: thesis : ?

Correct Answer: Essay

A keystone is the central stone that supports and holds an arch together. In the same way, a thesis is the central idea that supports and holds an essay together.

The other options don’t represent the whole structure that the thesis supports.

Sentence Completion Practice Question

Choose the words from the answer choices that best complete the sentence.

Because the committee wanted to avoid favoritism, the selection process was made ________, and the judges remained ________.

Correct Answer: impartial … anonymous

To avoid favoritism, the process must be impartial (fair and unbiased), and keeping judges anonymous helps prevent pressure or influence.

  • elaborate … visible doesn’t ensure fairness.
  • secret … involved is vague and doesn’t address bias.
  • swift … celebrated says nothing about fairness or privacy.
  • experimental … public could increase bias rather than reduce it.

Verbal Classification Practice Question

This question type shows three words that are alike in some way. Decide how they are alike, and choose the word that belongs in the same group as the first three words.

simile | metaphor | personification

Correct Answer: hyperbole

Simile, metaphor, and personification are all figurative language devices used to create imagery or emphasis in writing.

Hyperbole is also a figurative device (deliberate exaggeration), so it belongs with the group.

The others, chronology, bibliography, footnote, and index, are organizational or reference features, not figures of speech.

Canadian Cognitive Ability Test Grade 6 Format & Structure

The Grade 6 Canadian Cognitive Abilities Test (CCAT) looks at how children reason, spot patterns, and solve problems.

Schools use the results mainly to help identify candidates for gifted and talented and other advanced programs.
