The following sample questions are also available in two other formats:
The following two questions have three figures. The first two figures in the top row go together. The third figure in the bottom row goes with one of the answer choices. Choose the answer choice that goes with the third figure.
In this question, the first row of geometric shapes is rotated in the anti-clockwise direction by 180° and the number of shapes is increased by one when moving from left to right (two triangles become three triangles).
Hence, the correct answer is option A.
In the first row, from left to right, the top geometric shape is placed at the bottom, without changing the position of the remaining two shapes.
Hence, the correct answer is option C.
In this question, the first three figures are alike in some way. Choose the figure from the answer choices that goes with the first three figures.
In this question, the top geometric shapes are divided into two equal halves with two different colors.
We need to look for an answer choice that also has two equal halves with different colors.
Hence, the correct answer is option B.
This question shows a paper folded several times and then punched with holes. The answer choices contain unfolded papers with punched-in holes. You need to determine which of the answer choices is the final product of the unfolded punched-in paper.
The correct answer is 5.
Every question in our practice packages is carefully developed to help your child feel ready and confident on test day.
1. Built from Official Test Materials – We begin by studying official CogAT sample questions and available test materials to understand exactly how each question type works.
2. Designed to Match the Real Test – Every question is created to reflect the same format, style, and level of challenge students can expect on the actual assessment.
3. Written by Test Preparation Experts – Our team develops original questions that follow the same thinking skills measured by the test, with clear explanations that help children understand their mistakes and improve.
4. Independently Reviewed – Each question is checked by a second education or assessment specialist to ensure accuracy, clarity, and consistency before it's published.
5. Updated Over Time – We regularly improve our materials using feedback from families and students, making the practice experience even better with each update.
By the time your child finishes practicing, they'll know what to expect and feel much more prepared for test day.
In this question, you are given three pictures. You must find the relationship between the pictures in the first row and choose the correct answer that follows the same pattern for the second row.
In the first row, from left to right, the number of clouds is decreased by 4 (from 7 to 3).
In the second row, there are 8 lightnings on the left. To find the correct answer, we need to use the same analogy as the first row.
So, we subtract 4 from 8 and receive 4. Then, we look at the answer choices to see which option has 4 lightnings.
The only answer choice that includes 4 lightnings is answer B, so this is the correct answer.
This question shows a series of images of beads on an abacus toy. You have to figure out the rule used to arrange the number of beads. Then decide how many beads should come next in the series.
The sequence 10, 9, 7, 6, 4 follows an alternating pattern of subtracting 1 and then 2.
Starting from 10, 1 is subtracted to reach 9, then 2 is subtracted to reach 7. This continues with alternating subtractions.
Following this pattern, the next number is 3. Hence, the correct answer is option B.
In this question, you are given an equation with a missing number. You must solve the equation to determine what number is missing.
First,
9+7=16
Then, the equation becomes:
23 = 16 + ?
To find the missing value, subtract 16 from 23,
23-16=7
Therefore, the correct answer is 7.
If your child finds some of the CogAT question types challenging, don’t worry. Many kids experience the same at this stage, when they’re just starting.
Encourage your child with small daily practices – they’ll build confidence as they improve.
Every bit of practice counts, and with time, your child will build stronger skills.

In this question, there are three pictures. The first two pictures go together in some special way. Choose the picture from the answer choices that goes with the third picture.
The first row shows a tiger and a piece of meat, illustrating the relationship between tigers and their food.
The second row features a goat and we need to pair it with the food it consumes. Therefore, the correct option is A.
The following is a Sentence Completion question. Listen to the audio recording and choose the picture from the answer choices that matches the instructions.
Option B consists of two 3D figures, while the others have one, three, or zero 3D shapes.
Hence, the correct answer is option B.
In this question, there are three pictures. These three pictures are alike in some way. Decide how they are alike. Then choose the picture from the answer choices that belongs in the same group as the first three pictures.
The first three images show different musical instruments. Option C shows a flute, which is also a musical instrument.
Therefore, the correct answer is option C.

Many parents are told that preparing for cognitive ability tests like the CogAT is either unnecessary or that it might give some students an unfair advantage.
In reality, preparing is about helping students understand the test format, develop strategies for solving problems, and feel more comfortable facing new types of questions, which can be overwhelming for young children.
Here’s why preparation is so important:
Ease Test Anxiety: Even high-achieving students can feel anxious when they see unfamiliar questions. Practicing in advance helps reduce their anxiety by making them familiar with the format, so they’re less stressed on test day.
Understand New Question Types: The CogAT introduces types of questions that many young students have never encountered in school, like number puzzles or paper folding. Practice helps them learn how to approach these new challenges with confidence.
Strengthen Cognitive Skills: Test preparation sharpens important skills like critical thinking, pattern recognition, and reasoning. These are skills that go beyond the test and support your child’s overall academic growth.
Level the Playing Field: Preparation doesn’t involve learning specific answers but building the problem-solving skills needed to do well on the test. It ensures that all students, regardless of their background, have the tools to show their full potential.
The CogAT is a long and challenging test, especially for young children who may be encountering these question types for the first time.
Their test-taking skills are still developing, so preparation ensures that their abilities truly shine when it counts most.
