The giant sequoia is one of the largest tree species in the world. Some giant sequoias can live for more than 2,000 years. Their thick bark helps protect them from insects and many forest fires. Although fires may damage smaller trees, giant sequoias often survive and continue growing.
Why are giant sequoias able to live for such a long time?
The passage explains that giant sequoias have thick bark that protects them from insects and many forest fires. Because these dangers can harm or kill other trees, this protection helps giant sequoias survive for a very long time.
The passage also states that giant sequoias often continue growing even after fires that may damage smaller trees. This shows that their bark plays an important role in helping them live for more than 2,000 years.
Choice A is incorrect because the passage does not mention that giant sequoias grow faster than other trees.
Choice B is incorrect because the passage does not discuss the softness of their wood.
Choice D is incorrect because the passage does not mention how often they lose their leaves.
Therefore, the best answer is C.
The Writing Mechanics section measures a student’s knowledge of grammar, punctuation, capitalization, spelling, and sentence structure. Students identify errors and choose the correct revisions to improve written sentences.

Jessica finished her homework and placed your notebook on the table.
How should the underlined pronoun be changed?
The sentence is about Jessica, a female person. The possessive pronoun should match the person it refers to.
The pronoun “her” correctly shows that the notebook belongs to Jessica.
Choice B, “his,” refers to a male.
Choice C, “their,” refers to more than one person or is used as a singular gender-neutral pronoun, which does not match the information given.
The Writing Concepts and Skills section measures a student’s ability to organize and communicate ideas effectively in writing. Students answer questions about paragraph structure, topic sentences, transitions, and the logical flow of information.

Choose the opening sentence that best fits with the details in the paragraph.
__________. The inventor noticed that metal objects near a magnet would move without being touched. He repeated the experiment using different materials and observed the same effect with iron objects. His findings helped scientists understand how magnets can attract certain metals.
The details in the paragraph focus on a scientist who observed how metal objects reacted to a magnet, repeated experiments with different materials, and used the results to make a scientific discovery.
An effective opening sentence should introduce the main idea that is developed in the rest of the paragraph.
Choice B does this by summarizing the scientist’s discovery and experimentation.
Choice A discusses the use of magnets in navigation, which is not mentioned in the paragraph.
Choice C focuses on toys that use magnets, which are unrelated to the scientist’s experiments.
Choice D gives a specific fact about magnetic fields, but the paragraph is about the process of discovery rather than the parts of a magnet.
Therefore, B is the best opening sentence because it accurately introduces the main idea of the paragraph.
The Verbal Reasoning section measures a student’s ability to think logically using words and language. Students analyze relationships, identify patterns, draw conclusions, and apply reasoning skills to verbal information.

Complete the statement by selecting the most logical conclusion.
If all students in the science club participate in monthly projects, and if Maya is a member of the science club, then…
The statement tells us that all students in the science club participate in monthly projects. It also tells us that Maya is a member of the science club.
Since Maya belongs to the group of students who are in the science club, she must have the same characteristics as all other members of that group: participating in monthly projects. Therefore, the most logical conclusion is that Maya participates in monthly projects.
Choice A is incorrect because the statements do not compare Maya’s participation to that of other students.
Choice B is incorrect because it reverses the relationship; the statements do not say that everyone who participates in projects is in the science club.
Choice D is incorrect because there is no information suggesting that all science club members are named Maya.
Therefore, C is the only conclusion that is fully supported by the given information.
The Vocabulary section measures a student’s understanding of word meanings and word relationships. Students use context clues and vocabulary knowledge to determine the meaning of words and select the best word to complete a sentence.
Sample Question – Grade 6 (DOK 2)
Choose the pair of words that best fits in the context of the sentence.
Firefighters must remain ______ while they ______ through smoke-filled buildings.
This sentence gives us two major clues: the people involved (firefighters) and the dangerous setting (smoke-filled buildings). Because the situation is a life-or-death emergency, the missing words must match that seriousness and purpose.
The first word needs to describe a professional mindset. While anyone would be “nervous,” a trained firefighter must remain calm to think clearly and stay safe under pressure. Words like “relaxed” or “curious” are far too casual for a disaster zone.
The second word needs to show their intentional action. Firefighters don’t just “climb,” “avoid,” or “wander” around aimlessly. They enter a burning structure with a specific mission, which is to search for trapped people or the source of the fire.
By looking at the stakes of the situation, Choice A is the only pair where both words perfectly fit a firefighter’s training and goal.
The Mathematics section measures how students apply math concepts and solve problems. The content includes number sense, operations, algebra, geometry, measurement, and data analysis.
This section also uses the Depth of Knowledge (DOK) framework to show the levels of thinking required.
Students recall math facts and perform basic procedures. Students solve simple calculations and identify shapes or formulas.
Students apply learned procedures to solve structured problems. Students interpret graphs and solve word problems with clear steps.
The Mathematics section measures a student’s understanding of grade-level math concepts and procedures. Students solve problems involving numbers, operations, geometry, measurement, data analysis, and other mathematical topics appropriate for their grade level
Sample Question – Grade 3 (DOK 3)
Two students solved the same problem.
Problem: A number is greater than 20 and less than 40. The number is a multiple of 3 and a multiple of 5.
Based on the information, which statement is true?
To solve this problem, a number must pass three strict tests. It has to be between 20 and 40, it must be a multiple of 3, and it must also be a multiple of 5.
If we look at Jamal’s number, 30, it easily passes the first test because it sits right between 20 and 40. Next, we check the math: 30 divided by 3 is 10, and 30 divided by 5 is 6. Because it fits every single rule perfectly, Jamal is correct.
If we look at Sofia’s number, 35, it is also between 20 and 40, and it is a multiple of 5. However, it fails the final test because 35 cannot be divided evenly by 3.
An easy shortcut is to multiply the two numbers together (3 X 5 = 15). Any number that is a multiple of both 3 and 5 must also be a multiple of 15. When we count by 15s (15, 30, 45), we can see that 30 is the only option that falls in the 20-to-40 range.
The Quantitative Reasoning section measures a student’s ability to solve problems using mathematical reasoning. Students identify patterns, analyze relationships, and apply mathematical concepts to unfamiliar situations.
Sample Question – Grade 5 (DOK 3)
On Day 1, Allan placed 3 marbles into an empty jar. Each day after that, he continued to add marbles following the pattern shown.

Which statement is true?
To find the value of A, we first need to figure out how many marbles Allan adds to the jar each day. The difference between the days grows larger every time, creating a clear pattern.
From Day 1 to Day 2, he adds 5 marbles. From Day 2 to Day 3, he adds 10 marbles. Then he adds 15 marbles, and then 20 marbles. The amount of new marbles increases by 5 each day.
Following this pattern, the step from Day 5 to Day 6 requires adding 25 marbles. If we add 25 to the Day 5 total of 53, we find that Day 6 has 78 marbles.
Now we can calculate the value of A, which is the Day 6 total minus the Day 4 total (78 – 33). This gives us a value of 45 for A.
Since B is 60, comparing the two shows that B is greater than A.
Schools can administer the ERB CTP in either paper-based or online format. Both formats measure the same skills and use the same test structure.
Some schools use online testing for faster results and easier administration. Other schools use paper-based testing based on classroom setup and preference.
The online ERB CTP is adaptive. This version is computer-based and includes subtests in ELA, Math, and Science (Science is included for Grades 3–9 only).
The test is structured in two stages. In Stage 1, every student within a subject area completes the same set of questions. This stage establishes an initial performance level.
Stage 2 then adjusts based on how the student performed in Stage 1. Students who demonstrate a stronger understanding are presented with more advanced questions, while those who need additional support receive less challenging items. This branching structure helps match question difficulty to individual ability.
The paper-based ERB CTP uses a fixed format. All students within the same level answer the same set of questions. The test does not change based on student answers.
Schools choose the format based on their testing setup and available resources.
ERB CTP testing time changes based on the student’s grade and the sections included by the school. Most subtests take around 20 to 40 minutes to complete. Lower grade levels usually complete shorter sections, while upper grade levels may spend more time on advanced reading and math tasks.
