What to Expect on the NNAT Test for 2nd Grade?

The Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test for Grade 2 students consists of 48 questions and has a 30-minute time limit.

The questions are divided into four types:

  • Pattern completion
  • Reasoning by analogy
  • Serial reasoning
  • Spatial visualization: includes two subtypes – combination and folding questions

The following sample questions cover each of these four question types.

NNAT Level C Pattern Completion Sample Questions

A picture has a missing piece. Look for the rule in the pattern – repeating colors, lines, or shapes – and choose the piece that makes the whole design fit perfectly. Small details like line direction and shading matter.

Question #1

NNAT Grade 2 Sample Question - Pattern Completion

Pattern Completion Question - Answer Options

The Correct Answer is E.

Solution to Pattern Completion Question

Question #2

NNAT Level C Practice Question - Pattern Completion

Pattern Completion Question - Answer Choices

The Correct Answer is C.

Solution to Pattern Completion Sample Question

NNAT Level C Reasoning by Analogy Sample Questions

The given shapes go together in a certain way, and you must find a new shape that goes with another in the same way. Ask, “What changed – size, number, shading, rotation?” Use that same rule to pick the match.

Question #3

NNAT Level C - Reasoning by Analogy Sample Question

Reasoning by Analogy - Answer Choices

The correct answer is option A.

In the first column, the first box contains two arrows: one is filled with yellow and the other with blue. The small blue arrow is positioned in front of the larger yellow arrow, both set against a white background.

In the same column, the second box features two downward-pointing five-pointed stars, one yellow and the other blue. The yellow star is in front of the blue star, and both are set against a blue background.

The second column is created by changing only the background color to the color by which the middle shape is filled, while keeping the shapes, sizes, and orientations of the arrows the same.

Following this pattern, the unknown box should be a similar modified version of the second box in the first column, which has a blue background with a yellow star in front.

Therefore, the unknown box will feature the same stars but with a yellow background. This option matches option A.

Thus, the correct answer is option A.

Question #4

Reasoning by Analogy Practice Question - NNAT Grade 2

Reasoning by Analogy Question - Answer Options

The correct answer is option D.

In the first column, all boxes feature two thick vertical yellow lines and two horizontal blue lines, maintaining the same shape, size, and orientation against a white background. However, the colur arrangement changes throughout the column.

For example, in the first box, the yellow vertical line is in front of the blue line, while in the second box, the yellow line is behind the blue line. In the third box of the same, the yellow line is again in front of the blue line.

The color relation between the first and second columns is that when yellow is placed in front of blue in the first column, then the blue color is in front of the yellow color in the second column, respective box, and vice versa.

A similar principle applies to determining the contents of the unknown box. In the third box of the first column, the yellow color is in front of the blue color, so the unknown box will have blue in front of yellow, while maintaining the same shape, size, and orientation. This leads to option D being the correct answer.

Therefore, the answer is option D.

NNAT Level C Serial Reasoning Sample Questions

Shapes change step by step across rows or down columns. Find the rule (add a line, flip a shape, change color, move, rotate, etc.), then predict the next step to complete the sequence.

Question #5

NNAT Serial Reasoning Sample Question - Grade 2

Serial Reasoning Question - Answer Options

The correct answer is E.

In this pattern, each box contains a circle and a diamond shape filled with blue, yellow, or white, as shown in the figure. The diamond shape is always in front of the circles in all the boxes.

The fill colors of the circles and diamond shapes vary in a specific way, ensuring that each box in a row has different fill colors for the circles and diamond shapes compared to the other boxes in the same row.

For example, in the first row, the first box has both the circle and diamond shapes filled with blue, the second box has a yellow circle and a white diamond, and the third box has a white circle and a yellow diamond.

This demonstrates that the fill colors of the shapes are different from one box to another. Following this pattern, we need to determine the fill colors for the unknown box.

The other boxes in the third row contain a white circle and a blue circle, along with a white diamond and a yellow diamond. Thus, the unknown box must have a yellow circle and a blue diamond shape.

Therefore, the correct answer is option E.

Question #6

NNAT Reasoning by Analogy Sample Question for 2nd Grade

Serial Reasoning Question - Answer Choices

The correct answer is option E.

In this pattern, each box contains several green-filled quarter circles, with some portions filled with white, as shown in the figure. In each row, the shapes in the second box are formed by combining the shapes from the first and third boxes.

In this process, the orientation, fill color, and position of the shapes remain the same; they are simply combined.

For example, in the first row, the first box contains a quarter circle in the top right, and the third box contains a quarter circle in the top left.

When these shapes are combined, they form a semicircle, which is placed in the second box of the same row.

To determine the unknown box, the same principle applies. The unknown box contains shapes that combine with the first box of the third row, resulting in the shapes found in the second box of the third row.

This leads to the shape found in option E. Therefore, the correct answer is option E.

NNAT Level C Spatial Visualization Sample Questions

These include two question types – combination and folding.

In combination questions, two shapes are combined to create a third shape.

In folding questions, the elements within the boxes are folded inwards to create a new shape.

Each of the question types could include a rotation in addition to the combination/folding of the shapes.

Question #7 – Combination

NNAT Spatial Visualization Sample Question - Combination

Spatial Visualization Question - Answer Choices

The correct answer is option B.

In this pattern, each box contains either a pentagon or a quadrilateral filled with yellow, blue, green, or white. In each column, the shapes in the third box are formed by combining the shapes from the first and second boxes of the same column.

In this process, the filled color, orientation, and position remain the same. For example, in the first column, the first box has a yellow-filled pentagon pointing to the right, and the second box has a white filled quadrilateral pointing to the left.

The third box of the same column formed a combined shape of the first and second boxes. To determine the unknown box, the same principle applies.

The unknown box contains the shapes that combine with the first and second boxes of the third column.

This leads to the shape found in option B. Therefore, the correct answer is option B.

Question #8 – Folding

NNAT Spatial Visualization Practice Question - Folding Figures

Spatial Visualization - Answer Options

The correct answer is option C.

In the first row, the first box features the yellow-filled triangles pointing upwards and the green-filled triangles pointing downwards situated outside on a square.

The yellow-filled triangles pointing upwards are attached to the top horizontal line, and the green-filled triangles pointing downwards are attached to the bottom horizontal line.

The mirror image of these triangles on the respective plane (if the triangle is attached to the horizontal plane, the mirror image is on the horizontal plane), shifts inside the square and touches the original point of contact from the first box.

The resulting shape is rotated by 90 degrees counterclockwise and finally placed in the second box of the same row.

To find what the unknown box contains, moving to the second row, the first box contains a geometric shape made with seven lines, filled with yellow and blue colors.

The yellow-filled shape is attached to the left vertical line, and the blue-filled shape is attached to the right vertical line.

The mirror image of these shapes on the respective plane (vertical plane), shifts inside the square and touches the original point of contact from the first box.

The resulting shape is rotated by 90 degrees counterclockwise; this description matches option C. Therefore, the correct answer is option C.
