The following sample questions are taken from the complete practice package and mirror each of the question types your child will face on the actual CogAT test.

CogAT Grade 8 Nonverbal Battery Sample Questions

Figure Matrices Practice Question

Figure Matrix questions are either 2×2 or 3×3 matrices comprised of different pictures. In each row and/or column, the pictures change in the same way or follow the same rule.

Choose the answer that goes in the empty box in the matrix following the same rule.

CogAT 8th Grade Practice Question - Nonverbal

The correct answer is D.

In each row, a ball with two jetted sides has three different arrangements. The ball is unfilled, filled with its left half, and filled with its right half.

One of the two jetted sides is filled, and one is unfilled, and they remain the same throughout the row.

The only option that meets the criteria is the shape at option D.

Welcome to your comprehensive practice resource for the CogAT 8th Grade test (Level 14).

The prep resources below are designed to familiarize your child with the test’s question types, improve their abilities, and maximize their chances of getting into your desired gifted or advanced program.

Figure Classification Practice Question

In Figure Classification questions, three pictures share a connection or a characteristic. Choose the answer that shares the same connection/characteristic from the answer choices.

CogAT Level 14 Practice Question - Figure Classification

The correct answer is D.

In this question, the pattern is as follows:

Each image contains two small figures inside one bigger figure.

The number of sides of the bigger figure is equal to the sum of the two smaller figuresโ€™ number of sides.

For example, the left picture consists of two triangles inside a big six-sided figure.

The correct answer is D because it is the only choice that follows the pattern (the big shape consists of seven sides, and the small triangle and trapezoid consist of a sum of seven sides as well).

Paper Folding Practice Question

In this question type, you’ll see a paper folded several times and then punched with holes. The answer choices contain unfolded papers with punched-in holes. You need to determine which of the answer choices is the final product of the unfolded punched-in paper.

CogAT Paper Folding Sample Question - Grade 8

The correct answer is A.

Solution to CogAT Paper Folding Question

A paper is folded into a quarter and then further folded from one of its corners. A triangle shape is punched into it. When the paper is unfolded, it will have eight triangular holes in it, as shown in option A.

Nonverbal questions can feel challenging in the beginning, especially when students are working under time pressure.

These types of problems ask children to notice visual patterns, complete designs, and think in pictures – skills that often take a little time to develop.

With regular exposure, your child will become quicker at spotting relationships, more accurate in their responses, and far more confident while working through this section.

The complete practice package includes more than 100 carefully designed nonverbal questions that build strong visual-reasoning and problem-solving skills, giving your child the support they need to succeed on test day.

CogAT Grade 8 Quantitative Battery Sample Questions

Number Analogies Practice Question

This question shows two pairs of numbers with a certain mathematical connection and another number that shares that connection with one of the answer choices. Find the missing number for the third pair.

[54 โ†’ 8] [66 โ†’ 10] [96 โ†’ ?]

Correct Answer: 15

The number on the right is obtained by subtracting 6 from the number on the left, then dividing the result by 6.

The numbers are:

54-6 = 48/6 = 8
66-6 = 60/6 = 10
96-6 = 90/6 = 15

Number Series Practice Question

This question provides a series of numbers that have a rule. Use the rule to determine which number will come next in the series.

9ย  ย 12ย  ย 8ย  ย 13ย  ย 19ย  ย 12ย  ย 20ย  ย 29ย  ย ?

The correct answer is 19.

In this series, the pattern is as follows: first 3 is added, then 4 is subtracted, then 5 is added, then 6 is added, then 7 is subtracted, then 8 is added, then 9 is added, and so on.

The pattern is: +3 โ€“ 4 + 5 |+ 6 โ€“ 7 + 8 |+ 9โ€ฆ

The operation that we use to change numbers follows this pattern: add, subtract, add, (Pause), add, subtract, add, and so on.

Which number should we use next?

We see that numbers increase by 1, and since in the last operation the number 9 was used (29 โ€“ 20 = 9), the next number we need to add or subtract will be 10.

Which operation should we use?

To continue the pattern, we must subtract, so to find the next number, we should calculate: 29 โ€“ 10 = 19.

Therefore, 19 is the correct answer.

Number Puzzles Practice Question

In these questions, you are given a set of equations. You must solve the equations to determine the number that goes instead of the question mark.

(? ร— 11) โˆ’ (โ™ฆ รท 11) = โ–ฒ โˆ’ 60

โ™ฆ = โ–ฒ โˆ’ 227

โ–ฒ = 987 โˆ’ 540

Correct Answer: 37

Calculate โ–ฒ:

987 โ€“ 540 = 447

Calculate โ™ฆ:

447 โ€“ 227 = 220

Substitute:

(? ร— 11) โˆ’ (220 รท 11) = 447 โˆ’ 60

Divide 220 รท 11:

20

Subtract 447 โˆ’ 60:

387

Rewrite:

(? ร— 11) โ€“ 20 = 387

Add 20 to both sides:

(? ร— 11) = 407

Divide both sides by 11:

? = 407/11

? = 37

Some children feel unsure about math at first, but consistency truly helps.

When they build skills gradually, problem-solving becomes less intimidating, and their confidence begins to grow.

Short, simple practice sessions each day can make a noticeable difference as your child becomes more comfortable working through challenges independently.

If youโ€™re looking for more structured support, the full practice package includes over 100 CogAT Quantitative questions. These questions improve accuracy and help your child feel ready and capable on test day.

CogAT Grade 8 Test Format & Structure

The 8th-grade CogAT measures how students think, reason, and process information. Schools often rely on these results when selecting students for gifted, advanced, or enrichment programs.

The assessment includes 176 questions and is typically taken by students around age 14. It focuses on three major areas of thinking, known as โ€œbatteries,โ€ each highlighting a different type of reasoning:

  • Verbal Reasoning โ€“ Understanding words, vocabulary, and relationships between ideas
  • Quantitative Reasoning โ€“ Working with numbers, identifying patterns, and solving math-based equations
  • Nonverbal Reasoning โ€“ Interpreting visual information, identifying patterns, and analyzing shapes or spatial relationships

Each battery is made up of three subtests, and every subtest has its own question count and format.

Schools decide whether to administer the entire exam in one sitting or spread it out over several days, depending on what works best for their students.

See the full breakdown of each section and its subtests in the table below.
